Euro Rivals Merge, Form Largest Rideshare Service to Take on Uber
Daimler's mytaxi said it will will merge with British rival Hailo in an all-share deal, creating Europe's largest smartphone-based taxi-hailing business.
Unlike U.S.-based ride hailing start-up Uber, which established itself to compete against taxi companies, the new company will operate using taxi firms.

It is the latest push by traditional carmakers to enter the taxi ride hailing services market dominated by Uber and other technology companies.
The companies declined to disclose financial terms.
"It's a paper deal. Daimler will own 60 percent of the new entity and the stakeholders in Hailo will own 40 percent," said Hailo CEO Andrew Pinnington, who will be chief executive of the combined company.
The merged entity, which will operate under the mytaxi brand, will have 70 million passengers and 100,000 registered taxi drivers in over 50 cities across nine countries in Europe, the companies said.
In similar deals this year, Volkswagen took a $300 million stake in Gett and General Motors invested $500 million in Lyft.
Hailo, which operates in Britain, Ireland and Spain, will combine with mytaxi, which is available in Austria, Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden.
The combined company will be headquartered in Hamburg, Germany.
Mytaxi founder Niclaus Mewes will take a seat on the supervisory board and in addition he will become managing director of Daimler Mobility Services.
Social Media Gets More Love, But Facebook and Twitter Don't Get More Likes
Americans are spending more and more time on social media, but are increasingly dissatisfied with the experience, a new survey shows. Although people are generally pleased with their overall online experience, social sites such as Twitter and Facebook saw a marked decrease in satisfaction year on year, according to the annual e-business report from the American Customer Satisfaction Index released on Tuesday.
Big drops for Facebook (68, down nine percent) and Twitter (65, down eight percent) dragged down the social media category, which scored a 73. That's a drop of 1.4 percent from last year.

"People who use social media are particularly touchy about two elements of the experience that are never going to go away as issues," ACSI's managing director David VanAmburg told NBC News.
"They're concerned about privacy and about doing the very thing that social media is all about - putting personal information out there and then being concerned with what people are doing with that information."
Nearly two-thirds of American adults now use social media, reported the Pew Research Center - and nearly as many rely on social media as a source for news.According to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, its average user now spends 50 minutes a day on Facebook, Instagram and Messenger platforms, up from 40 minutes a day in 2014,
Results from the ASCI study, based on 5,125 consumer interviews conducted in the second quarter of 2016, also showed an uptick in satisfaction for e-businesses. Social media, search engines, information sites, and news/opinion websites improved for the third straight year, with an ACSI score of 75 on a 100-point scale.
But advertising continues to be a frustration.
"Consumers have not fully accepted advertising as a necessary cost for online services they have come to expect as free," said Claes Fornell, ACSI chairman and founder in a statement. "There is little companies can do to change that perception beyond making sure that those advertisements are relevant and non-disruptive."
Wikipedia was the top-rated site in the social media category, well above average at 78, followed closely by YouTube (77) and Google+ (76). Pinterest (76), Instagram (74) and Tumblr (67) all dropped three percent. LinkedIn (65) tied with Twitter for last place.
VanAmburg said it's impossible for "global brands with massive user bases like Facebook and Twitter to make everyone happy," especially when both are trying to do so much. YouTube and Wikipedia are different, he said, because they provide "a very specialized and focused experience."
It's interesting to note that customer satisfaction accessing social media sites is slightly higher on mobile apps (73) and mobile browsers (72) than on desktops or laptops (71). The survey also found that social media is slightly less able to keep content as fresh as users would like.
Search and Information Sites: Google It
Satisfaction with search engines and information sites increased slightly in the past year. Users seem pleased with the ease of navigation, variety of information and services they provide.
Once again, Google retains the top spot. The giant of search engines jumped eight percent to score 84 out of 100. That gives Google a nine-point lead over its closest competitors - Bing (up four percent) and MSN (up one percent) which both scored a 75.
Yahoo (74) is a close third, but satisfaction with Yahoo dropped one percent. About.com, Answers.com and AOL tie for the bottom spot with a score of 69, eight points below the industry average.
"Google is still king and unlikely to be going anywhere," VanAmburg said. "It's essentially a race between Google and everyone else. The smaller search engines and information sites just can't compete with the simplicity and yet power of what Google can provide as a search engine and as a gateway into the wider Internet, whether you're looking up a news item or just searching for a recipe."
Again, users said the amount of advertising was the worst part of their experience on these search and information sites. As with social media, satisfaction with these sites is much higher on mobile devices: mobile apps (80), mobile browsers (77) and desktop/laptop (73).
News and Opinion Sites Are More Satisfying
Conservative candidates have spent much of the campaign season bashing the news media, but the ACSI survey found that satisfaction with news and opinion websites is up dramatically this year. The category jumped four percent to 76, its highest score ever.
"Nearly every website improves, regardless of political leaning, showing that the most interesting and unpredictable election in decades has been good for the news business," the report noted.
One reason for the stronger satisfaction: better scores for fresh content (80), ease of navigation and variety of information (78) and overall site performance (77). The one exception was a growing dissatisfaction with advertising.
Most of the survey respondents said they access news sites from a traditional desktop or laptop.
Is the presidential campaign driving up satisfaction? VanAmburg told NBC News it's too early to tell.
"People are fascinated by the news right now because of the political campaigns and they are increasingly satisfied, regardless of their own personal political bent, by the content and the opinion pieces that they're reading on their favorite news sites," he said.

Deadline Looms For Microsoft's Free Windows 10 Offer
If those pushy pop-ups didn't succeed in getting you to take advantage of the free upgrade to Windows 10, perhaps the looming deadline this Friday will do the trick.
Microsoft Windows users who are eligible for the upgrade have until July 29 to upgrade for free. After the deadline, a license for Windows 10 Home will cost $119 or $199 for the Pro version.
The free upgrade is available for many personal devices running Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, according to Microsoft.
Productivity is the key theme running through the new features in Windows 10, which include the ability to create multiple desktops and snap up to four apps to the same screen, ending the nuisance of toggling between two windows to get work done.
Internet Explorer is still present in the update but has taken a backseat to Microsoft's new browser, Edge, which boasts the ability to make notes on a screen and easily share with friends.
Microsoft's virtual assistant, Cortana, is also integrated into the update and can tackle everything from finding a document from a specific day to helping users find coupons when they're shopping online.
As an extra incentive to upgrade before the deadline, Microsoft said it plans an anniversary update on August 2 that will be packed with new features, including the opportunity to log in to certain websites and apps using biometric identifiers instead of passwords, and more power efficiency.
For now, Windows 10 users will also have access to Windows Hello, a feature launched with the upgrade last year that uses facial recognition technology to enable users on supported devices to log on just by looking at the screen.
Since its release last summer, Windows 10 has been installed on more than 350 million devices, according to Microsoft. The company has said it hopes to hit one billion devices by 2018

The film will release in December 2017, and it picks up right where The Force Awakens left off.
HBO confirmed that the seventh season of fantasy epicGame of Thrones would indeed air later than usual and would only contain seven episodes, as epected. And Paramount Pictures announced that the rebooted Star Trek franchise would be getting another instalment - its fourth - with Chris Hemsworth returning to reprise his role as Captain Kirk's father.

That's all to come though. Welcome back to The Weekend Chill, and here are our picks for your weekend:
TV:
BoJack Horseman
BoJack Horseman is, in one line, a satire and critique of Hollywood culture. It does this by looking at a fading eponymous star who remains best known for his work on a sitcom called Horsin' Around. But the show isn't just okay with exploring the surface.

Over the first two seasons, BoJack Horseman has touched upon how lonely some celebrities can be, even when they are surrounded by people all day. And hence, at times, the Netflix half-hour comedy can feel more like self-introspection drama that begins with laughing at some of the characters and slowly turns into nervous laughter.
The third season, debuting this Friday on Netflix in full, is more of the same according to initial reviews. Will Arnett (Arrested Development), Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad), Alison Brie (Community), Amy Sedaris (Puss in Boots) voice the main characters.
Orphan Black
Orphan Black is one of the rare shows that is shot and created in Canada. It stars Tatiana Maslany as multiple characters who look exactly the same - because they are clones - focusing on one called Sarah Manning who takes on the identity of a fellow clone called Elizabeth Childs, after being a witness to her suicide. With that as its lens, the series explores the morality and ethics of cloning itself while also touching upon control of life creation.

Owing to the nature of the show, Maslany has to shoot a lot of scenes over and over while the camera is moved in just the same way as before. To help her interact with herself, Orphan Black uses doubles - Kathryn Alexandre primarily - and tennis balls. For her performance, Maslany has twice been nominated for an Emmy and once for a Golden Globe.
The fourth season finished airing back in June, and it's now available as a season set on disc and digital.
Movies:
Star Trek Beyond
When JJ Abrams rebooted Star Trek's cinematic franchise in 2009, it was well received by most. The follow-up - 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness - didn't have the desired effect as its unnecessary need to include one of the great villains in Khan Noonein Singh pissed off many. With Star Trek Beyond, the directorship passes onto Justin Lin - who is most famous for his work on four out of the seven Fast and Furious films. There are a couple of newcomers to the cast as well: Idris Elba as Krall and Sofia Boutella as Jaylah.

The sci-fi space saga created by Gene Roddenberry has captured millions of hearts and minds since its inception in mid-1960s. And now in its 50th year, Star Trek Beyond is everything the original TV series was in combination with the CGI expertise of today. Plus, it pays a lovely tribute to both Leonard Nimoy - who played Spock back in the day and passed away last year - and Anton Yelchin - who plays Chekhov in the reboot series and died in a freak accident last month.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was disappointing in a number of ways when it released back in March - bloated being one of the concerns, considering its two and a half hour runtime. But that hasn't stopped Warner Bros with the release of the film's Blu-ray version this week that brings along the so-called Ultimate Edition - a 3-hour cut that expands on story threads that were never properly explained.

On the TV front, sci-fi artificial super-intelligence (ASI) drama Person of Interest which aired its final episode last month is now available as a complete set of all five seasons (103 episodes!). While the series started with Jim Caviezel and Michael Emerson in the lead, it soon expanded the entourage to include Taraji P Henson, Kevin Chapman, Amy Acker and Sarah Shahi. It had its ups and downs - more of the latter in the middle - but it did manage to go out on a high.
Video games:
I Am Setsuna
Announced at last year's E3, I Am Setsuna fits into the Japanse role-playing genre of games. It is being made by Tokyo RPG Factory, whose formation was announced at the same time. In the game, you will get to access multiple characters across towns and dungeons from an angled top-down perspective. The story follows a mercenary maiden called Setsuna who must sacrifice herself to appease a bunch of demons. It's set in the land of forever winter, and sadness is at the core of the story.

The game has been available in Japan since February this year, but it's taken a few months to convert all the game assets into English. Early reviews suggest the game evokes the feeling of classic JRPGs, so if that's something you've been missing, go ahead and pick it up.
Apps:
Dots & Co
Remember Dots? How about Two Dots? Developer Playdots is back with a third title in their mobile series, which is like the previous entry but with companions and powers to boot. The developer is also promising "beautiful landscapes", more than 15 visual mechanics that have you running from fire or breaking ice, and 155 "completely original" levels that will probably take you months to finish. That's not counting the numerous upgrades it will keep rolling out, so if you're planning to complete every level, good luck.

As before, it's free to play though the game will eventually bug you to make in-app purchases. But in our experience, you won't need to spend any money until you reach a really high level.

Apple Sells More iPhones Than Expected, Shares Jump After Hours
Apple sold more iPhones than Wall Street expected in the third quarter and estimated its revenue in the current period would top many analysts' targets, soothing fears that demand for the company's most important product had hit a wall.
Its shares rose 7 percent in after-hours trading.
The world's most valuable publicly traded company said it sold 40.4 million iPhones in the third quarter, down 15 percent from the year-ago quarter but slightly more than the average analyst forecast of 40.02 million, according to research firm FactSet StreetAccount.
IPhone sales dropped for the second straight quarter, pushing down Apple's total revenue 14.6 percent in the fiscal third quarter, ended June 25.
Demand for Apple's phones has waned in China, partly because of economic uncertainty there, and has also slowed in more mature markets as people tend to hold on to their phones for longer. The sales slump has stoked concerns about whether the tech leader can continue to deliver profits at the level Wall Street has come to expect.
"China was a major letdown," said Patrick Moorhead, an analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy. "Samsung and Huawei are much more competitive now than a year ago and the Chinese economy is not doing well at all."
Moorhead said, however, that increased services revenue - which includes the App Store and iCloud - was a "very big bright spot for Apple."
Chief Financial Officer Luca Maestri told Reuters in an interview that Apple's performance had topped his expectations in a quarter weighed down by tough foreign exchange rates and difficult comparisons with blockbuster iPhone 6 sales from the previous year.
Related: 15 Years of the Apple Store
Apple reduced channel inventory by $3.6 billion, exceeding the $2 billion expected reduction, meaning sales were better than they appeared, Maestri said.
Customer demand "was better than what is implied in our results and better than we had anticipated," he said.
Sales of the iPhone fell last quarter for the first time since the gadget's release in 2007, dropping 16.3 percent. Maestri projected the gadget's average selling price to rise in the September quarter.
The iPhone drives about two-thirds of Apple's total sales. Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook said during a call with analysts that the iPhone SE, a cheaper, four-inch (10 cm) phone released this year, was extending the range of people able to buy Apple phones.
"It's opening the door to customers we weren't reaching before," he said.
Apple's quarterly net profit fell 27 percent to $7.8 billion, while revenue of $42.36 billion beat analysts' average estimate of $42.09 billion.
Sales in Greater China, once touted as Apple's next growth engine, decreased 33.1 percent, compared with a 112.4 percent growth in the year-earlier quarter and a near 26 percent fall in the second quarter.
Maestri attributed the drop to channel inventory reduction in the nation, foreign exchange headwinds and a general downturn in the Chinese economy.
"It is very clear that there are some signs of economic slowdown in China, and we will have to work through them," he said.
Adding to Apple's woes in China, the company's stores for books and movies went dark earlier this year. Cook said Apple was working with regulators to restore the services but played down the financial impact of the outage, saying the stores yielded less than $1 million in revenue during the short time they were on the market.
"It's not a revenue-related issue," he said. "This is a service we want to provide our customers."
Apple's services business, which includes the App Store, Apple Pay, iCloud and other services, generated nearly $6 billion in revenue, up 18.9 percent from the previous year.
As iPhone sales level off, Apple is attempting to use such services to wring more revenue out of its existing base of users. The business emerged as Apple's second largest after the iPhone for the first time in the second quarter, eclipsing gadgets such as the iPad and the Mac.
That shift bodes well for Apple because gross margins on services are better than the average for the rest of the company, Maestri said.
"It's a great business because it is recurring in nature and more linked to our installed base," he said.
Maestri touted music as an example of one successful service, saying the growth of the Apple Music streaming service had more than made up for declines in digital downloads. To redouble its momentum in music, Apple purchased rights to the next season of popular series Carpool Karaoke, CBS Television Studios announced on Tuesday.
India was one of the rare bright spots, with 51 percent growth in iPhone sales, as Apple expands into emerging markets.
"India is now one of our fastest growing markets ... We're looking forward to opening more retail stores in India down the road, and we see huge potential," Cook told analysts.
